Set the voice and format Claude answers you in

If you keep asking Claude to be shorter, or to lead with the answer, or to stop being so chatty, you can set that once instead of every turn. An output style is a saved set of instructions for how Claude talks to you. Pick a tone and a format here and this builds you that style as a file.

You do not need to know how to code to use this. The bottom of the page tells you where the file goes, including a way that involves no typing at all.

Name it

A short name so you can find it in the menu later. Plain words are fine, and capitals and spaces are allowed here.

What it is for, in a line

A short phrase shown next to the style in the menu, so future you remembers what it does. You can skip it.

Tone

How you want it to sound. Tick as many as fit. Each one you pick turns into a real instruction in the file, not just a label.

Format

How you want answers laid out. Tick as many as fit. Each one becomes a real instruction too.

Is Claude still writing code?

If you are only changing how Claude talks and it is still doing the same coding work, tick this so it keeps everything it already knows about writing code well. Leave it unticked for a job that is not about code at all, like a writing helper or an analyst.

Anything else

Add any instruction in your own words. It goes into the file as-is, so this is where a role ("answer like a patient teacher") or a rule of your own belongs.

Where the file goes

      
The easy way, with no typing: hit Copy, then paste the whole thing to Claude and say save this as an answer style I can use on every project. It knows where these files live and will put it in the right place.

      
By hand: it is a small text file that lives in a folder called output-styles inside the .claude folder. For one project, that is .claude/output-styles in that project. To use the style everywhere, put it in .claude/output-styles in your home folder instead. Name the file after the style, like plain-and-brief.md. The download is already named for you.

      
How to turn it on

      
In Claude, run /config and pick your style under Output style. It takes effect on your next fresh start. Switch back to the normal style the same way whenever you want.
